Meet Atlanta! Lab / Catahoula Mix 9 months old Female Approx. 40 lbs. Here is what the shelter has to tell us about the pups: The 'City Pups' are extraordinarily beautiful dogs. Pics do not do them justice at all. Very very friendly. I have not seen any sign of aggression. They have lots of energy like a typical 9 month old lab. If we have foster homes, these dogs will come to rescue on 12/9. Safe Haven pays for vetting and provides supplies while you foster. These dogs are also available for our Foster to Adopt program. Please email safehavendogsil@yahoo.com for a foster home application She is also available for our Foster to Adopt ... (Read More)program. This program allows you to be the family that greets her when she arrives in Illinois. Foster to Adopt families have the first option to adopt if you determine this is the pup right for you! While you foster, we pay all expenses from vetting, to food and we provide a crate, leash, collars, and toys. Your family provides love (something she desperately needs!) and a safe place to lay her head until she finds her forever home. We also require that you have the ability to take her to routine veterinary visits at our participating vets. These vets are located in Wheaton, Naperville, Geneva and Elmhurst. Spay/Neuters are done in North Aurora. Fostering is the most life giving thing you can do for a dog or puppy! It is a very rewarding experience that will make a huge impact on their life. Rescue Me ID: 16-12-02-00433Vanessa (female)

Great Pyrenees Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Vanessa DOB 1/10/15 Great Pyr/Aussie/Lab Mix Vanessa - AKA Nala came to us from Kentucky where she was found with her siblings matted, cold, and scared. She was adopted as a puppy to a family that ran in to some difficult times and through no fault of Vanessa's, she needed to be returned to the rescue. Vanessa had not been socialized with many other dogs and really had no idea how to act with other dogs around. We did not have a foster home that had no other dogs, so we asked or training partners at Woofbeach to help. Without hesitation, they took her into their training program, which included going home with trainers each evening ... (Read More)and weekend because we had no foster home. Her named was originally Nali, but the trainers at Woofbeach thought she looked more regal'|so Vanessa it is! She was a star student and has been through the Woof Beach program and has passed with flying colors. She is great with people of all ages and sizes, loves children, and other dogs! One of the pictures here is at one of the trainer's homes with his children and his dogs'|she has really come a LONG way! We cannot thank Woofbeach enough for helping us in our time of need. They say she is a sweetheart that deserves to find her forever home. If you are interested in her, you email us at safehavendogsil@yahoo.com or you can ask about her at any of the Woofbeach locations (Batavia, Geneva, or South Elgin). Our standard adoption fee is $295 cash or check and $300 credit card ($5 processing fee). It includes spay/neuter when age appropriate at our participating vets, age appropriate core vaccinations, fecal testing, deworming, flea and tick preventative,1st vet visit at one of our participating vets, and micro-chipping. Rescue Me ID: 16-12-02-00127Claire & Tulip (female)

Beagle Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Meet Claire and Tulip! Both Approx. 1-2 yrs old Claire- 30 lbs. Feist/Terrier Mix Tulip- 15 lbs. Beagle Mix Looking for a PATIENT family to give these 2 beauties a SECOND CHANCE! The old saying 'Opposites Attract' couldn't be more true in the case of Claire and Tulip! These southern bells have had very difficult pasts, before coming to rescue. They were both dealt difficult hands in life and they're hoping someone will give them a second chance. Now they find themselves in the same foster home and have grown to become best friends. Though they are both very different, they each have something that the other needs, and together, they ... (Read More)compliment each other very nicely. They will make the perfect duo for a family looking for a little bit of everything! Claire has a bold and friendly personality. She loves all people that she meets and is always willing to get some pets from whoever will supply them. She struggles with meeting new canine friends though, and is always 'on guard' when she is around dogs she doesn't know. She is currently living with 4 other small dogs and would like to be an alpha female in her new living situation. Tulip is her best friend, they play nicely together, snuggle at night, and Tulip is just fine letting Claire be in charge! Claire has an instinctual high prey drive and would not do well with small animals, cats, or birds in her new home. She loves to chew on bones and toys (she doesn't chew on things she shouldn't) and has never met a toy she's not willing to unstuff! Once you see the pure joy it brings her, you won't mind cleaning up the fluff on the floor! In high stress situations, Claire has lashed out at other dogs and has bitten. For this reason, we strongly recommend she go to a home with a family that has prior dog experience. Claire has never shown any aggression towards humans. Claire is a very smart dog and would benefit from having a job or being enrolled in a training program. We have had Claire evaluated and it is deemed that she is highly trainable, she just needs someone willing to give her that chance. She walks well on a harness and leash. Claire has some issues she needs to work through, but we know she's a great dog and we're hoping someone will see that and give her that second chance! Tulip has a very timid and fearful nature. She has been through many unfortunate experiences in her short life and this has caused her to struggle with trust. Claire gives Tulip the confidence to try new things and begin to trust. If given patience and time, Tulip will learn to have faith in her human friends too and she then becomes quite snuggly and loving. Tulip will need to be watched carefully and always walked with a secure harness, as she is a good escape artist and very difficult to catch! Tulip loves all dogs she meets. She is the perfect size for snuggling on the couch or in bed. She loves to play with toys and play tug with Claire. Tulip can sometimes find things around the house to play with that she should not, but she is easily redirected. Though she is slow to trust and become comfortable, if you give Tulip the time she needs to come out of her shell you'll be rewarded with a sweet and loving little girl. Claire makes a fantastic running partner and Tulip will tag along as well once she gets comfortable. Both girls would do well with a fenced in yard where they can run and play together, but will always need to be monitored while outside. Both Claire and Tulip have excellent indoor house behaviors. They are both crate trained and housebroken. Tulip needs to go out slightly more often and would do well with someone who is home part of the day. Neither girl has been around small children and we feel they would do best with a quiet family with older children. Since these two unlikely friends get along so well, we'd like to try to find them a family where they can stay together and give each other reassurance and love to make transitioning to a new home and family easy for all involved! Claire & Tulip will ONLY be adopted out together, not separately. Please contact the rescue for adoption pricing on this duo! It includes spay/neuter when age appropriate at our participating vets, age appropriate core vaccinations, fecal testing, deworming, flea and tick preventative,1st vet visit at one of our participating vets, and micro-chipping. We must have an application, conduct a phone interview, and meet your entire family to approve an adoption. Please email safehavendogsIL@yahoo.com for an application or additional details.     Meet Autumn! DOB 9/26/2016 Rat Terrier/Hound/Chihuahua??? mix Female Currently 7 lbs. Autumn and her 3 siblings were born in a high kill shelter in Alabama. Luckily, their family was rescued and transported to safety in Illinois when they were 2 weeks old. Rescue Me ID: 16-11-14-00614Pecan & Walnut-Bonded (female)

Lab Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Pecan and Walnut Bonded Pair Young Adults Lab/Hound Mixes Meet Pecan and Walnut, a special bonded pair that are looking for a family. When Pecan and Walnut came to Safe Haven from a shelter in Alabama, they were placed in different foster homes to provide them with all the love they desperately needed. Both, although loving, were lost in these homes and became withdrawn. It was then we discovered that they are a bonded pair that have likely been together most of their lives. We had done them a disservice! Bonded dogs share truly exceptional emotional ties and communication patterns. They look to, and count on each other for company, ... (Read More)comfort, stress relief, exercise, shared play, social signals, coping skills and trust building. They develop routines with each other -- often, very funny ones! Because they share so much "insider info" with each other, and have become "two sides of the same coin," and they need to remain together. If you think that that having two companion animals is always double the work, think again! Adopting a pair of pals can end up being less work: Many destructive behaviors are due to boredom or separation anxiety. A built-in, long time, playmate naturally provides the stimulation and security needed to reduce the potential for neurotic behaviors to develop. It can also alleviate concerns about leaving a companion animal and the potential separation anxiety that may occur. Bonded pairs bring special benefits to their new families. Out of the shelter, they blossom once again in stable, loving environments, and their individual personalities begin to emerge. The adjustment is eased by the continuity of still having each other for comfort and play! While we're not sure if they are siblings or not, these two have lived together for their entire lives and are very close. Since they have been reunited, they have come a very long way! They are both very loving, but Pecan is a bit shyer than Walnut and relies on Walnut for direction. If you have room in your heart and home to make a difference in the lives of two homeless pets, please consider Pecan and Walnut. Twice the dogs equal twice the love. There is a special adoption fee for the adoption of both girls! Adoption includes spay/neuter when age appropriate at our participating vets, age appropriate core vaccinations, fecal testing, deworming, flea and tick preventative,1st vet visit at one of our participating vets, and micro-chipping for both dogs. It seems most of his past playmates must have been dogs so when he really relaxes and is having fun, he play bites, like you would see 2 dogs do when they play. He is not aggressive and we are working on eliminating this habit. He enjoys rides in the car and going on new adventures. We must have an application, conduct a phone interview, and meet your entire family to approve an adoption. Please email safehavendogsIL@yahoo.com for an application or additional details. Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Meet Kelly! Lab Mix Approx. 3 years old Kelly is an absolute love bug, who will steal your heart. She is a 3 year old lab mix. Right now she is 44 lbs, but needs to gain a little bit of weight. Kelly has never lived with a family or in a home before coming to us, but you would never know it with her personality. She loves to cuddle! She would spend all day either hugging (yes, she loves to give hugs) or just being by your side or resting her head on your lap. She loves to give kisses and nothing makes her happier than being with people. In spite of her living in a shelter her entire life, she did amazingly well in our home. She ... (Read More)immediately took to her crate and her blanket - it is her favorite place to hang out during quiet times. She is working on the potty training and she seems to be picking it up very quickly. As long as you let her out often, she knows what outside is for. Kelly is very good on the leash, and enjoys short walks as long as it is still light out. Not living outside a shelter, all the changes are new to her and the dark seemed to confuse her. Kelly seems to love other dogs and has shown an interest in playing, without any aggression. Kelly's energy level has been growing a bit more everyday. She is finally enjoying playing fetch and loves to run around the yard, however she seems to enjoy nap time just as much. Kelly has the potential to be very fast. Although she never seemed to want to get too far from us, a fenced yard would be recommend. Kelly is crate trained. Kelly needs a little bit of help with training and obedience, as she is very puppy like with her behavior, but she is so smart and eager to please that I know she would be the perfect dog with a little bit of training and a lot of love! Our standard adoption fee is $295 cash or check and $300 credit card ($5 processing fee).
